Generally speaking, heaven and earth show truthfulness, and then four seasons are in operation regularly; the sun and the moon show truthfulness,and then day and night alternate fixedly; the Son of Heaven exercises truthfulness, and then the kingdom is at peace; the princes are true to their promises, and then their manors are in harmony; gentlemen practice truthfulness, and then they can secure a place in life. The ancient sensible rulers and sagacious assistant ministers acted in accordance with cultivating plebeians and beautifying customs; therefore, it never happened that those who lost the trust of plebeians for an instant could retain their high positions and handle the common people. It is the truthfulness of the Son of Heaven to follow the example of the truthfulness of heaven and earth, exercise truthfulness and seek after stability in order to unify the kingdom. It is the truthfulness of princes to observe the law and uphold justice so as not to betray the Son of Heaven.It is the truthfulness of gentlemen to make a promise verbally, keep it firmly in mind and perform it so as to secure a place in life. If one strives for credit and upholds justice, then he can have the way of conducting himself ascertained.(Vol. 49 Fu Zi)
