文王問太公曰：「君務舉賢，而不獲其功，世亂愈甚，以至危亡者，何也？」太公曰：「舉賢而不用，是有舉賢之名，而無用賢之實也。」文王曰：「其失安在？」太公曰：「其失在君好用世俗之所譽，而不得真賢也。」

文王问周太公说：「国君致力推荐贤才，欲没有取得功效，天下混乱更加严重，进而造成国家危急灭亡，为什么？」

太公说：「推荐贤才却不予重用，这是空有推荐贤才的虚名，却没有重用贤才的具体效果。」

文王问：「错在哪里？」

太公说：「过失就在国君喜欢任用一般人所称赞的人，因而得不到真正的贤才。」

King Wen said to Tai Gong, “A ruler has been devoted to recommending virtuous talent without obtaining effects, and the world’s turmoil becomes more serious, which causes the feudal state to be critical and perishing. How come?”

Tai Gong answered, “Recommending virtuous talent without appointing them means having recommended virtuous talent in name, and having not put appointing virtuous talent into practice.”

King Wen asked, “What’s the fault?”

Tai Gong answered, “The fault is that the ruler cares for appointing the men idolized by the average people, so he cannot obtain real virtuous talent.”(Vol.31 Lu Tao)
